T-minus 31(or so) hours... [12-16-2010]

In less than 2 days, the family and I will be piling into the metallic peat family truckster and heading on our Griswold family vacation. Check that- we will climb into the RV so graciously loaned to us by our wonderful friends!

I am excited about the trip. I have always wanted to see the country (and the world) and decided my Vistakon earnings would be put to good use seeing the many beautiful sights out there. Always an idealist, I sat down a few months ago and plotted out a 16-day venture cross country and back. I shared it with John. He immediately was excited about going and began to hurl like a snowball towards elation about the trip. I, however, began the slow spiral downward towards "good God what have I done?"

It goes without saying that a trip of this magnitude involving 6 people requires a ton (ok---lets be honest here---a shit ton) of planning. The list-maker in me sprang into action and methodically planned a trip which would allow us to see the country, all while avoiding every McDonald's and Wal-Mart in lieu of local diners and dives and small RV parks. I thrive on the planning. The doing, not so much :) This trip is *almost* planned to the minute. I couldn't be prouder. The rest of the family couldn't be more scared (well, maybe with the exception of Reagan!).

I have said numerous times that if we make it through this trip with all 6 of us still alive, I will consider it a success. I have also said I am looking forward to this trip like you anticipate a surgery: I know it will be painful and I hope I don't die. But ultimately it will be for the best. Especially if it creates good memories for the kids.

Tonight we headed to Wal-Mart for supplies. And so began sticking point number one: how much food (read:junk, snacks, crap) to have on the trip. Thankfully we spent less than we thought, and oddly enough I tried to let go of a little of the control.

So this trip will be rather interesting. Mr Have-fun-fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants and Mrs Plan-to-make-sure-all-goals-are-accomplished. Plus 4 of the most varied kids you've ever met! Join us as we visit New Orleans, Dallas, Roswell, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Hollywood, Disneyland, Sequoia National Park, Yosemite, Arches National Park, Four Corners, Oklahoma City, and Memphis! The fun begins Saturday the 18th at 7am (if you ask John) 7:30 (if you ask me).  :)
