DAY ONE, part three: Marianna, FL to New Orleans, LA
We broke out the games for this leg of the trip. My mother bought Reagan the game before our road trip to Detroit last year, and it has been a bit of a God-send and a curse. Depending on our mood, of course! What it amounts to is an “eye spy” style game, with specific travel-related items to find. Its always fun to try and find someone picking their nose. And it’s a challenge to find a pay phone…so we bent that one to allow for a cell phone.
You can only play the “old fashioned” games so long before the craving hits the kids to play the Wii (or in the case of the teens, the craving to sleep some more). Thank goodness for modern technology and how it has allowed for our kids to entertain themselves on such a long road trip. The Roads & Trips program we have tells me this trip is approximately 6000 miles. WOW. Lemme say that again: WOW.
The sun is beginning to set and the only striking thing about this leg of the trip has been a few long bridges and what I’m assuming is the busiest gas station in all of Alabama (just outside Mobile). It’s been quiet (good) and other than the standard me vs John squabbles, no fighting either (even better). Thank goodness!
The plan for tonight is to eat somewhere on or near Bourbon Street in New Orleans. The hard part has been trying to figure out how to get into the city with an RV. After speaking with the man who runs the campground, a taxi ride is going to be doable and affordable. The other option was a public bus. With 4 kids. Ummmmm, no.
I’m excited to see the French Quarter. I wish I had more time to see the old homes and the cemeteries and other sights New Orleans has to offer. But that will have to wait for the future. For now I am simply hoping no one offers my teenagers any beads, and am considering having a Hurricane with dinner. If I come home with beads, don’t ask. :)
